My design, "Above the Nest", depicts Ospreys as more than a bird but also a sentinel of Sarasota’s waters, a symbol of resilience, and a living thread in the tapestry of Florida’s native wildlife. Protecting these raptors means preserving the integrity of the ecosystems they represent, ensuring that future generations can continue to marvel at their aerial grace and ecological importance.

Ospreys embody Sarasota’s connection to its environment. More specifically, their nests, often reused and expanded year after year, become landmarks of continuity in a rapidly changing landscape. My design intends to bring awareness to the continued threats from shoreline development, pollution, and habitat loss. Conservation efforts such as protected nesting sites, public education, and art calls such as these, are steps needed to maintain stable populations. Ospreys are often used as ambassadors for broader environmental stewardship, reminding residents and visitors of the delicate balance between human activity and natural heritage.

Florida Ospreys in Sarasota’s native landscape are a striking symbol of Florida’s wild beauty and ecological resilience. My design emphasizes its 6ft wingspan and piercing gaze that scans the waters below. In Sarasota, where coastal habitats, rivers, and wetlands converge, these raptors are keystones of the region’s native birdlife, masterful hunters, and vital indicators of environmental health.

Ospreys thrive in Sarasota’s fish-rich waters, nesting atop utility poles, mangroves, and specially built platforms. Their presence signals a healthy aquatic ecosystem, as they rely almost exclusively on live fish. My design is a reminder of not only their beauty but also of nature’s precision and power.
